Ultrasound Q & A

When do I need an ultrasound during pregnancy?

Most pregnant women have a first-trimester ultrasound, which often happens during your first visit (the pregnancy confirmation appointment). Your first ultrasound reveals the location of the placenta and measures your baby's growth, which helps confirm your due date.

Additionally, you often get to hear your baby's heartbeat, a special moment for every expectant mother. First-trimester ultrasound can also serve as a screening for some genetic issues.

Depending on your specific pregnancy risks and health issues, you may need additional ultrasounds during your pregnancy. For the safety of both you and your baby, Oasis Women's Wellness Center recommends pregnancy ultrasounds only when medically indicated.

When do I need an ultrasound for nonpregnancy reasons?

Ultrasound is often thought of as a pregnancy test, but many of the ultrasounds Oasis Women's Wellness Center performs are for nonpregnancy reasons. You may need an ultrasound if you're having any kind of gynecological issues, such as:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Overlong periods
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pelvic pain, including severe pain during periods
  • Infertility

Ultrasound is so helpful for gynecological conditions because it provides a detailed view of your uterine lining, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and other abnormal tissue in your pelvis. This helps with accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

How do I prepare for an ultrasound?

Oasis Women's Wellness Center lets you know if you need any special preparation. Usually, with abdominal and some pelvic ultrasounds, you need to have a full bladder, so be sure to drink plenty of water before your appointment.

But, don't drink so much water that it hurts because it's important that you don't void your bladder until the ultrasound's complete. Usually, it’s fine for you to eat normally before your ultrasound.

What does an ultrasound feel like?

Ultrasounds at Oasis Women's Wellness Center are quite comfortable. A water-based gel is applied to either your belly or vaginal entrance, depending on the type of ultrasound you're having. The gel helps the ultrasound wand, the transducer, glide smoothly and painlessly.

Generally, you won't have to do anything special during the ultrasound, but you may need to briefly shift position or hold your breath to help your ultrasound technician capture the best images.
